Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is a Refurbished laptop a good solution
A:  Ex-government laptops are predominantly business-grade laptops designed to last.  Most manufacturers have a consumer range and a business range. An example is the HP EliteBook (Business range) vs HP Pavilion (Consumer range), the Business grade EliteBook use cutting-edge components that the manufacturer’s now 3+ years later utilise in their consumer pavilion range.  So, a 3-4 year old refurbished business laptop may have a similar specification to the current model and is perfectly suitable for a student at a fraction of the cost.  They often feature stronger materials in their manufacture, such as carbon fibre or magnesium alloy instead of plastic moulding, making them more robust.

Q: What are the different types of grading when it comes to refurbished devices?
A: There are typically two types of grading for refurbished devices - Class A and Class B.

Q: What does Class A mean?
A: Refurbished Class A refers to the highest quality grade available for refurbished devices. When a product is graded as Class A, it signifies that the device has been renewed to be 'as good as new'. As is expected with second-hand goods, there may be minimal signs of fair wear and tear present, which may mean minor scratches or dents.

Q: What does Class B mean?
Refurbished Class B is the second grading given to refurbished electronic devices. This grading generally means that the device may have some noticeable, minor defects or scratches present. These defects would be purely cosmetic based, and won’t affect the overall performance of the device. The device would still go through the same refurbishment process as a Grade A device.

The sorts of cosmetic defects that could be expected when purchasing one of our devices include:
— Keyboard imprints on LCD screen
— Minor scratches, scuffs, or dents on the laptop's case
— Shiny keys or shiny surfaces around the keyboard and trackpad areas
— Visible signs of wear & tear

Q: Where will my warranty work be performed and how long will it take to repair?
A: Unlike most vendors of consumer-grade laptops in Cairns.  Laptop Shack repairs laptops onsite in the Cairns office within 7-10 days, depending on parts availability.  We offer a loan laptop for the period of repair (if available).
